"People are like meadows – a glorious potpourri of character, color, and personality. Intermingled, they form the
beautiful carpet of life. Sadly humankind seeks to destroy those they view as 'different.' Preferring instead a lawn where every blade is identical in height and color. Nature didn't plant lawns, she planted meadows."

The Most Given Flower

Is the dandelion the most given flower in the world?  Roses are the traditionally gifted flower of love, but when one considers the bounteous bouquets of dandelions given by tiny hands to their mothers, roses may pale in comparison.

Sarah is the mother of our three young children.  She recently speculated that the dandelion is the most given flower in the world.  Indeed Spring and Summer in our home bring a kitchen counter cluttered with vases, glasses, cups, and mugs dutifully displaying dandelion bouquets in various states of delight and droop.  This possibility piqued my interest and I vowed to learn more about the dandelion.

I was amazed to discover some interesting facts about the flower.  The deeper I delved, the more apparent it became that this small drop of sunshine bears a striking similarity to the bright, unfailing, and under- appreciated love of the very people who so delight in it; namely children.  How many of us spend our Saturdays toting bottles of potent poisons designed to rid our precisely manicured quarter acre of those bothersome blooms.  Despite our worst abuse, the dandelions return to our gardens and greenery, innocently doing the one thing they know - brightening the world with their sunshine.  Similarly a child rashly reprimanded will still run to us, throwing its tiny arms around our necks in joy.  No matter how careless we may be with our children's love, it seems to bubble over like this ubiquitous blossom.  Like a durable dandelion a child's love is enduring, forgiving, and without guile.

But the beauty of the bloom is more than petal deep.  This blossom is rife with health and culinary surprises.  From dandelion salad to dandelion wine; the leaves, roots and blossoms bear benefits to the body seldom found in other herbs.

I have developed a tremendous new respect for this little drop of sunshine, and have set out to capture its beauty – and the love it represents – in pictures, words, and music.  DandelionLove.com is a tribute to the magic of a small flower – and the love of children which it embodies.  If you have a special appreciation for- or a unique anecdote about dandelions and the little darlings please feel free to share it here.  Otherwise sit for a season, browse our banter, and we hope you will find a little bit of joy in your garden where before there was none!

Sincerely,
HF Johnson
